The Golden Taste from the Golden State

After a successful racing career, Ben Pon (1936 – 2019) left his family business and moved to the United States to pursue his other passion, making wine. In 1992 he started his vineyard in Carmel Valley in California. His goal was to create a portfolio of wines that could compete with the very best wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy. Of which the Bernardus Chardonnay from Monterey County has been labeled 'The Golden Taste from the Golden State'.

A full wood-matured Chardonnay

The Bernardus Chardonnay is loved for its full wood-matured taste. This wine is matured for nine months in new French oak barrels. French oak generally has softer, elegant flavors such as vanilla, dark chocolate and coffee. More and more established French wineries are switching to stainless steel barrels. Bernardus consciously chooses to continue making wine in the traditional way and to mature the wines in French oak barrels, which are specially made for Bernardus in Bordeaux and Burgundy. The oak comes from various French tonneliers, which allows different aromas to come together beautifully.

Introduced in 1994 and immediately labeled as the "hot new wine" by the Wine Spectator and in the early years a welcome guest at various 'White House Dinners'. The Bernardus Chardonnay is full of flavor, buttery and has clear white fruit aromas with accents of vanilla, caramel and subtle toasted oak tones. To obtain a Chardonnay of this quality, our winemaker selected grapes from two coastal areas in California, Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands. But it is not only the press that scores high. On Vivino this wine was voted #1 Top 25 Californian Chardonnay wines by consumers.
